Bregman was expected to be drafted in the first round out of high school. During his final year, he broke the second knuckle on his right throwing hand while deflecting a bad hop on a ground ball. It cost him the season. As a second baseman, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. He declined the Red Sox’s offer. Instead, he chose LSU (LSU). Bregman studied sports management at LSU. He was a shortstop for the LSU Tigers baseball team in the SEC (SEC). As a freshman, he donned the number 30, representing the 30 teams that passed on him in the 2012 draught.
In 2013, he hit.369 with 104 hits, second in the country. Bregman earned the Brooks Wallace Award for outstanding college shortstop in 2013. Baseball America, the American Baseball Coaches Association, Perfect Game, and the Jewish Sports Review all named him an All-American. He was also named 2013 National Freshman of the Year by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and the NCBWA, and 2013 SEC Freshman of the Year and first-team All-SEC by league coaches.
He was also named to the 2013 USA Collegiate National Team (for which he batted .361). In 2014, he batted.316 and was named to the USA Collegiate National Team. By hitting.312 in 2015, Bregman helped No. 1 rated LSU to the College World Series, he won LSU’s Skip Bertman Award, which honors the spirit of LSU Baseball. The ABCA awarded him the Rawlings Gold Glove at shortstop, and he was named a second-team All-American by Baseball America and the NCBWA. He was one of four finalists for the 2015 Golden Spikes Award, won by outfielder Andrew Benintendi. Bregman signed with the Astros for $5.9 million in June 2015.
In late June, he debuted with the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Class A Midwest League. The Astros assigned Bregman to the Lancaster JetHawks of the California League in late July 2015. Bregman began 2016 with the Texas League’s Corpus Christi Hooks and was promoted to the AAA Fresno Grizzlies. America’s Minor League Player of the Year, Bregman. He was also a Baseball America Minor League All-Star and the 2016 Astros Minor League Player of the Year. The Astros acquired Bregman’s contract from the Grizzlies on July 25, 2016.
On the same day, he debuted at third base against the Yankees. On July 31, Bregman hit his first major league hit, a center field single against the Detroit Tigers. On August 16, he tied the game against the Cardinals with a two-run home drive to right field at Minute Maid Park. In 49 games, he batted.264 with 8 home runs and 34 RBIs. Bregman began his 2017 baseball season as the youngest member of Team USA, which won its first WBC gold medal by defeating Puerto Rico 8–0 in the final.
He was invited to play for Team Israel, who finished sixth in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. “I definitely should’ve” played for Team Israel, he remarked later, “because I only got four at-bats” for Team USA. This past season, he batted.284 with 39 doubles, five triples, 19 home runs, 88 runs, 71 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases (tied for the lead among all major league third basemen). He led AL third basemen in fielding percentage (.970), while also playing 30 games at shortstop.
With a 101–61 record, Houston advanced Bregman to his first MLB playoff. 286 with 31 home runs, 51 doubles, 83 extra-base hits, 96 walks, 105 runs, 103 RBIs, 7.0 at-bats per strikeout, 15.1 power-speed number (10th). Bregman finished 5th in the AL MVP voting. Bregman batted.556 in the 2018 American League Division Series, with a.714 OBP and a 1.333 slugging percentage. Bregman had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in early January 2019. Six years and $100 million later, Bregman and the Astros extended their contract, thought to be the second-highest for a Jewish athlete (after Ryan Braun’s $105 million agreement in 2011). Bregman hit.296 in 2019 with 41 home runs and 112 RBI.
