Steven Yeun (December 21, 1983) is an American actor and producer who was born in Seoul, South Korea.Yeun is well known for his roles as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead (2010–2016) and Ben in Burning (2018). He received critical acclaim and a slew of awards for the latter. In addition, he acted in and executive produced Minari (2020), which earned him critical praise and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, making him the first Asian American actor to do so.
He was also the first Asian-American actor to be nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the Screen Actors Guild. Yeun has also appeared in films such as I Origins (2014), Okja (2017), Mayhem (2017), and Sorry to Bother You (2018), and he has voiced main characters in television shows such as Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016–2018), Tales of Arcadia (2016–2021), Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters (2017–2018), Final Space (2018–2021), Tuca & Bertie (2019–present), and Invincible (2021–present).
Yeun was born to Je and Jun Yeun in Seoul on December 21, 1983. His father was a South Korean architect before relocating his family to Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1988.He has a younger Canadian brother named Brian. After that, the family relocated to the United States, settling in Taylor, Michigan, and then Troy, Michigan, where Yeun attended Troy High School until 2001. Yeun grew up in a Korean-speaking family. Ruth M. Buck Elementary School was his school in Regina.
Yeun was born into a Christian family and raised in a Christian environment.After meeting a doctor with the same name, his parents, who operated beauty supply stores in Detroit, began naming him “Steven.” In 2005, he graduated from Kalamazoo College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a focus in neuroscience.
While in Kalamazoo, he befriended comic Jordan Klepper’s sister, who took him to see Klepper’s improv show, inspiring him to attend his first acting lesson and subsequently join Klepper at The Second City in Chicago. Joe Lynch’s action horror flick Mayhem cast Yeun in March of 2016. On November 10, 2017, the movie was released in theatres.
Yeun was cast in the action-adventure film Okja, directed by Bong Joon-ho, in April 2016. At the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, the film competed for the Palme d’Or in the main category. On June 28, 2017, it was made available on Netflix. In the 2017 film The Star, Yeun gave the voice of Bo.
Following that, Yeun played with Lakeith Stanfield, Armie Hammer, and Tessa Thompson in Boots Riley’s dark comedy Sorry to Bother You, which was released in theatres on July 6, 2018, alongside Lakeith Stanfield, Armie Hammer, and Tessa Thompson. In January 2018, the film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film received the Top Ten Independent Films award from the National Board of Review in 2019. At the 2019 Independent Spirit Awards, it was also named Best Screenplay and Best First Feature Film. Late last year, Yeun starred as Ben in Lee Chang-South dong’s Korean mystery drama Burning. At the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, the film was first shown.
His work in the film received positive reviews. At the 2018 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards, the Florida Film Critics Circle Awards, and the National Society of Film Critics Awards, Yeun was named Best Supporting Actor.
In 2020, Yeun participated in Lee Isaac Chung’s A24 immigrant drama Minari, alongside Youn Yuh-jung, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Will Patton, and Scott Haze, as well as serving as an executive producer. Yeun used his own immigration experience into his acting in the film, which is about a Korean family that becomes farmers in Arkansas.
In January 2020, the film made its international premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received two top honours. For his performance in Minari, Yeun was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. For his role with Minari, he was named to the Time 100 in 2021, Time’s annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people.
In Stephen Karam’s award-winning one-act play adaptation The Humans, he will star with Jayne Houdyshell, Richard Jenkins, and Amy Schumer. Yeun is a voice actor who has worked on both animated and live-action films. Avatar Wan in The Legend of Korra Season 2, Steve Palchuk in Trollhunters and 3Below, Keith in Voltron: Legendary Defender, Nathan Park/Wingspan in Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters, Little Cato in Final Space, and Speckle in Tuca & Bertie are just a few of the roles he has played.
Yeun’s part as Steve Palchuk was later confirmed to be continuing in Wizards, the third instalment of the Tales of Arcadia trilogy.On December 21, 2018, Netflix published the first season of 3Below, and on July 12, 2019, Netflix released the second and final season.Late last year, Yeun won a starring part in Jordan Peele’s Twilight Zone revival episode.
Invincible, an animated superhero series based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, premiered on Amazon Prime in March 2021, and he now voices Mark Grayson in it. On December 3, 2016, Yeun tied the knot with photojournalist Joana Pak. They have two children and live in Los Angeles.
Yeun owns a stake in The Bun Shop, his younger brother Brian’s Korean-Mediterranean fusion restaurant in Los Angeles’ Koreatown neighbourhood. He is a longstanding supporter of the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings, and he has endorsed Andrew Yang for President of the United States in the 2020 election.
