Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. is an American actor, producer, and director. He was born on August 17, 1943. He is best recognised for his nine collaborations with filmmaker Martin Scorsese, for which he has won two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. De Niro was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 2009, and in 2016, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama of the United States.
De Niro studied acting at HB Studio, Stella Adler Conservatory, and Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio after being born in Manhattan, New York City. His first major appearance was in Greetings (1968), and he rose to prominence after appearing in the sports drama Bang the Drum Slowly as a baseball player (1973). Mean Streets, in which he played small-time crook “Johnny Boy,” was his first work with Scorsese.
His role as young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s criminal epic The Godfather Part II (1974), which won him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, catapulted De Niro to stardom. He received two Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his roles as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976) and as a soldier in The Deer Hunter (1978).
Robert Anthony De Niro Jr., the only child of painters Virginia Admiral and Robert De Niro Sr., was born on August 17, 1943, in the Manhattan borough of New York City. His father was of Irish and Italian origin, and his mother was of Dutch, English, French, and German background. His parents, who met at Hans Hofmann’s painting courses in Provincetown, Massachusetts, divorced when he was two years old after his father revealed his sexual orientation.
His mother reared him in the Manhattan areas of Greenwich Village and Little Italy. De Niro’s father grew up in the neighbourhood and was close to him. Because of his pale complexion, De Niro earned the nickname “Bobby Milk,” and he befriended many street youngsters in Little Italy, much to his father’s chagrin. Some of his buddies, on the other hand, have been with him throughout his life.
His mother was raised as a Presbyterian but later became an atheist, while his father had been a lapsed Catholic since he was 12 years old. De Niro was surreptitiously baptised into the Catholic Church while staying with his grandparents following his parents’ divorce, which was against his parents’ wishes.
De Niro was a sixth-grader at PS 41, a Manhattan public elementary school. At the age of ten, he began taking acting classes at the Dramatic Workshop and made his stage debut in The Wizard of Oz as the Cowardly Lion. For the seventh and eighth grades, he attended Elisabeth Irwin High School, the Little Red School House’s upper school. He was then admitted to the High School of Music and Art for ninth grade, but only stayed for a few months before transferring to IS 71, Charles Evans Hughes Junior High School, a public junior high school.
De Niro went to McBurney School and then Rhodes Preparatory School for his high school education. He discovered that acting helped him overcome his shyness, and he became attracted with cinema, so he walked out of high school at the age of 16 to pursue acting. “When I was approximately 18, I was watching a TV show and thinking to myself, ‘If these actors are earning a livelihood at it, and they’re not really that good, I can’t do any worse than them,'” he later stated.
He went to Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio and HB Studio to study acting. De Niro also trained with Stella Adler of the Stella Adler Conservatory, where he learned the Stanislavski techniques. De Niro was influenced by the work of Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Greta Garbo, Geraldine Page, and Kim Stanley when he was a young actor. De Niro is regarded as one of the best performers of his generation, according to several journalists. De Niro was “transforming himself – physically, vocally, and psychologically – with each successive job,” according to A. O. Scott. In the process, he’s redefining the art of acting right in front of our eyes.”
The performer “gives you the shock of becoming, of a metamorphosis that might be thrilling, moving, or terrifying,” according to Newsweek in 1977 .Although Pauline Kael previously claimed in 1983 that she did not enjoy how De Niro was “disfiguring” himself in films like Raging Bull, biographer Douglas Brode compliments De Niro’s adaptability and ability to embody any part.
“To completely immerse oneself in another character and live life through him, without having to risk the real-world consequences—well, it’s a cheap way to do things you would never dare to do yourself,” De Niro said when asked why he took on such roles. He was named one of the Kennedy Center Honorees in 2009, with the inscription: “One of America’s finest cinematic performers, Robert De Niro has displayed a legendary commitment to his characters and co-founded one of the world’s major film festivals.”
At the event, he was honoured by Martin Scorsese and Meryl Streep. In 2016, President Barack Obama honoured him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “Everyone on this stage has touched me in a very powerful, very personal way These are people who have helped mould me into the person I am,” Obama added. “There is no arguing that the people who will be honoured today are extremely merited,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.
Six of De Niro’s films have been inducted into the United States National Film Registry as of 2020, making him an American cinematic legend. The American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American films of all time includes five of his films. For the most films represented on the AFI list, De Niro and James Stewart tie for first place.
Seven of De Niro’s films were chosen by actors in the industry for Timeout magazine’s list of 100 finest movies. De Niro gave the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin his collection of film-related items, including scripts, outfit pieces, and props, in 2006. The collection was opened to the public in 2009 after a two-year process of processing and cataloguing.
