Marilyn Knowlden born May 12, 1926 is a former child actress from the United States. She began acting in Hollywood films when she was four years old, in 1931. Throughout the decade, she established herself as a freelancer, working often at many big film studios and appearing in films such as Imitation of Life, Les Misérables, and Angels with Dirty Faces. She worked with Katharine Hepburn, James Cagney, and Claudette Colbert, among others. Six of the films in which she starred were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture within a seven-year period.

She stopped acting in films as an adult, but she was still involved in local theatre. Marilyn Knowlden was born in Oakland, California, on May a Utah-born attorney (and eventually her agent), and Bertha McKenzie were her parents.  On December 23, 1921, they tied the knot.  She was the only child in her family. In early 1929, when she was about three years old, she joined a baby beauty pageant and was proclaimed the winner.  She began taking dance lessons when she was three years old. Early on, one of her teachers saw her show business talent and predicted that she would succeed in the entertainment world. Theodore Kosloff, a Russian-born ballet dancer, choreographer, and actor, was one of her teachers.

Looking like a younger version of the leading lady was frequently a factor in her being cast in a certain role. She was never contracted to a studio throughout the studio system era, unlike most actors, both children and adults.
