Fiction writer, director, and actor Lauren Shippen is a multitalented artist. The podcast known as The Bright Sessions, as well as its offshoot series known as The AM Archives and The College Tapes, were all created by her. Shippen’s performance in The Bright Sessions earned her the Audio Verse award for best actress in a drama (the character also appeared in The AM Archives). She has also written three novels that take place in the same universe as The Bright Sessions. Shippen was recognised as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 for the year 2018. New York City is where Shippen began his life.
She attended William & Mary for her education, where she focused primarily on her musical studies. Shippen moved to Los Angeles after graduating from college in order to pursue a career as an actor. He split his time between working at a restaurant and auditioning for roles. It was around this time that she started formulating concepts for a podcast, drawing on her prior experience in the fields of music and sound editing and being partially motivated by the show Welcome to Nightvale.
Her first thought was to center the story on a girl who time travels, who would be played by Shippen, and to have her talk to a therapist in order to set up a dialogue between characters rather than having a single-character monologue. Shippen would play the role of the main character. This eventually evolved into the show known as The Bright Sessions, which aired for a total of four seasons between the years 2015 and 2018, and was written by Shippen, who also provided his voice for one of the main characters, Sam Barnes.

In recognition of her work on the show, Shippen was presented with multiple Audio Verse Awards, including the 2016 Award for Best Writing of an Original, Short Form, Ongoing Production and the 2016 Award for Best Performance of an Actress in an Original Ensemble Role for a Short Form Production for her role as Sam.

Shippen is the author of a book series based on characters from the show, and the first book in the series, titled The Infinite Noise, was published in 2019.
A production company called Atypical Artists was established by her, along with Jordan Cope and Briggon Snow, in the year 2019. The corporation was founded with the intention of publishing new podcasts, particularly those set in the same world as The Bright Sessions. Shippen is responsible for the creation of all of the new podcasts, including The AM Archives and The College Tapes, which are both a part of the Bright Universe and were written by Shippen.
As a result of The Bright Sessions, opportunities to work on other shows presented themselves, and John Scott Dryden reached out to Shippen with the prospect of having him contribute to his new fiction podcast, Passenger List. Alongside Dryden and Mark Henry Phillips, she contributed to the project by taking on the roles of co-writer and co-director. This program, which can be found on the Radiotopia podcast network, investigates the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a transatlantic flight. The first season of Passenger List was awarded the BBC Audio Drama Award in 2020 for the category of Best Podcast or Online Audio Drama; Passenger List was published in 2019. The 2022 award for the same category was given to the second season of the show.
In 2019, Marvel and Stitcher Premium collaborated to produce an audio dramatization of the comic book MARVELS in the form of a podcast. The adaptation was written by Shippen, and Paul Bae directed it. Mischa Stanton was in charge of sound design for the production. In the year 2020, Lauren was involved in the production of the musical web series In Strange Woods, which was nominated for an iHeart Radio Podcast Award. Lauren also provided her voice for the character “Gerda.”
In 2021, she worked with Aaron Mahnke to produce a fiction podcast called Bridgewater. The podcast is about folklore and the Bridgewater Triangle. It took home the award for “Best Fiction Podcast” from the iHeartRadio Podcast Awards. Shippen also authored and directed the prequel podcast for the Netflix series Stranger Things called Rebel Robin. Maya Hawke, who plays the character Robin Buckley, serves as the show’s protagonist in the podcast. Maxine Miles, a podcast conceived of and written by Shippen, was distributed by Atypical Artists in the year 2022. It is a mystery that the reader can interact with and it was written with young adults in mind.
