Jessica McKenna is a well-known comedian and actress in the United States. McKenna began her training at The Groundlings and continued it at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, both of which are frequent performance venues for her. McKenna, along with Nicole Byer and Alison Rich, is one of the stars of the Fox show Party Over Here, and she is also the host of the podcast Off Book: The Improvised Musical at the present time. McKenna was born in Yorba Linda, which is located in the state of California. She attended Northwestern University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theatre there. After completing her undergraduate degree, McKenna started her training at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where she eventually became a regular performer in 2012. She is a member of the musical improv house teams Magic to Do and Baby Wants Candy, and she performs with them on a regular basis. BIOGRAPHY:
McKenna has participated in improv comedy performances at a variety of festivals, some of which include South by Southwest, SF Sketchfest, Edinburgh Fringe, the Del Close Marathon, Bumbershoot, and Chicago Sketch Fest. Riot was an improv-based game show that aired on Fox in 2014, and McKenna was a regular cast member on the show until it was canceled. In 2016, McKenna starred in the sketch comedy show Party Over Here on Fox alongside fellow Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) alumnae Nicole Byer and Alison Rich. The show was produced by The Lonely Island and Paul Scheer. After only one season, Party Over Here was taken off the air. McKenna has been seen in episodes of the television shows Modern Family and The Goldbergs.McKenna frequently works together with Zach Reino, who graduated from UCB. Both Funny or Die and BuzzFeed as well as Nickelodeon has featured musical sketches that McKenna and Reino have collaborated on.
In 2016, McKenna and Reino collaborated on the writing of the web series Serious Music for ABC and starred in the show as well. They also appeared in an episode of the Dropout series Game Changer titled “The Official Cast Recording,” in which they improvised a short musical based on the prompts given to them by host Sam Reich. This episode was also featured alongside Zeke Nicholson. Play It By Ear was a full series that was later developed from this concept and aired on Dropout. McKenna is also employed in the field of voice acting. On the Amazon show Little Big Awesome, McKenna provides the voice for the main character, Lennon. On Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer, it was initially announced that McKenna would voice the lead character; however, in the end, creator Aaron Springer was cast in that role.
McKenna, along with co-writers Neil Casey, Zach Reino, and Niccole Thurman was awarded the Writers Guild of America Award in 2022 for her work on the series Baking It. The award was given in the category of “Quiz and Audience Participation.” In 2023, she and the other writers of Baking It was once again considered for the same award. This time, she received a nomination. Off Book: The Improvised Musical is a musical comedy podcast that has been hosted by McKenna and Reino since 2017. The podcast was originally featured on the Earwolf network. McKenna is also a frequent guest on the podcast version of Comedy Bang! Bang!, where she is recognized for characters such as Beth, an eight-year-old girl who is obsessed with Power Wheels, and This Is Your Boy Troy. McKenna has also been seen on Improv4Humans, The JV Club, Doughboys, and Hollywood Handbook.
