He had two siblings older than him. He graduated from Mackenzie High School in 1951 and attended the Wayne State University and Los Angeles University (UCLA). He was first discovered in ‘The Rainmaker”s university performance. He joined the US Air Force, where he spent four years before he took up his job.
In 1957, Skerritt married and had three children, Andy, Erin, and Matt. The pair split up in 1972. In 1977, he married Sue Oran, who managed a guesthouse. They had a son, Colin. They had a son. The relationship, however, terminated in 1992.
Then he met Julie Tokashiki, his present wife, and got married in 1998 for the third time. The couple took up a daughter, splitting his time between their residence in Lake Washington and their home on the San Luan Islands, Lopez Island.
BIOGRAPHY:
In 1962 he made his big-screen debut with Robert Redford in Denis Sanders’ picture “War Hunt” as Sergeant Stan Showalter. His experience of the armed forces helped him to take part in an instant hit of the 1970 American black-comedy-war movie ‘MASH.’
His appearance in ‘Harold and Maude’ in 1971 followed quickly. In 1972 he played ‘Detective Bert Kling’ in Richard A. Colla’s action-comedy ‘Fuzz.’ Then he took a short vacation from films and came back with 4 pictures, including ‘Big Bad Mama’ and ‘The Night Stalker,’ in 1974.
In the drama ‘The Turning Point,’ which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including 1977’s ‘Best Picture,’ he played the important role ‘Wayne Rodgers’ played. He played the character of ‘Captain Dallas,’ the captain and lone member of the human crew on a spacecraft, in the science-fiction horrors of Alien in 1979.
He acted in several successful films over the 1980s, including “Silence of the North” and “Maid to Order.” He was accompanied by Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis by the romantic military action ‘Top Gun,’ published in 1986. In the 1992 thriller-drama movie ‘Poison Ivy,’ directed by Katt Shea, he portrayed the character of ‘Darryl Cooper’ with Drew Barrymore and Sara Gilbert.
He was also shown in Robert Redford’s coming-of-age drama ‘A River Runs Through It’ the same year. He has been active in more than 40 films to date, among them his recent performances as ‘Ron’ in ‘A Hologram for the King’ (2016) and ‘Fred’ in the dramatic picture ‘Lucky’ (2017).
During his acting career, he has appeared in over two hundred TV episodes. His small-screen début was as a soldier in the Combat series on ‘ABC,’ from 1962 until 1967. In the episode of ‘Run for Doom’ of ‘The Alfred Hitchcock Hour’, he played ‘Dr. Frank Farmer’ in 1963.
Rollers in the Death Valley Days (1963–1968) as well as in ‘Twelve O’Clock High’ (1964–1967) were recurrent. The Western play “Gunsmoke,” directed by Norman Macdonnell from 1965 to 1972, was his longest-running radio and television series. He was also included in the serial ‘The F.B.I.’ (1966–1972).
During his career, he attended various guest appearances and experimented with a range of roles. The part played in ‘James Paisley” in ‘The Good Wife’ (2014) and ‘Patrick McCord’ in ‘Madam Secretary’ was his recent appearances on TV (2015).
Skerritt had also made several theatre appearances, including his 1990 performance alongside Lee Remick in ‘Love Letters’ and his 2004 Seattle production role in ‘Our Town.’ He has also worked behind the camera and has directed a few TV serials, notably the “A Question about Sex” episode ‘A Birth Control’ episode. He directed several episodes of the award-winning serial “Picket Fences,” where he also acted.
