In 2003, he returned to acting in the films “In the Cut” (2003) and “View from the Top” (2003), in which he starred alongside Meg Ryan and Gwyneth Paltrow. Both films, on the other hand, were flops at the box office. The year 2004 saw him appear in four films: “13 Going on 30,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and “Collateral.”
His versatility was on full display in these flicks, which showcased his ability to work across genres. The actor began appearing in well-known Hollywood movies and independent films again after 2004. As an actor, he became well-known thanks to roles in films such as “Just like Heaven” (2005), “All the King’s Men,” “Zodiac,” “Reservation Road,” and “The Brothers Bloom” (2008).
He appeared in Clifford Odets’ ‘Awake and Sing!’ in 2006 at the ‘Belasco Theatre,’ in New York City. His performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for ‘Best Featured Actor in a Play.’ While at the world-renowned “Toronto Film Festival,” he showed his film “What Doesn’t Kill You,” which was released the following year. “Sympathy for Delicious,” his first directed feature, came out in 2010. ‘Sundance Film Festival’ premiere and ‘Special Jury Award’ winner.
As well as earning his first “Academy Award” nomination, in the same year he appeared in the comedy “The Kids Are All Right,” he also received BAFTA nominations for “Best Supporting Actor.” In 2012, he played Dr. Bruce Banner a.k.a. the Hulk in ‘The Avengers,’ and garnered positive reviews for it. Since then, he’s returned to the role in Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, and the Avengers: Infinity War series, as well as the upcoming Avengers: Endgame (2019).
His other film roles include “Now You See Me,” “Thanks for Sharing,” and “Begin Again,” all of which were released in 2013. (2013). In 2014, he played the lead role in the television adaption of ‘The Normal Heart,’ a hit Broadway play. He was nominated for an ‘Emmy’ for his performance. His role in ‘Foxcatcher,’ which garnered him ‘Golden Globe’ and ‘Academy Award’ nods, came later in the year.
Earlier in the same year, in the comedy ‘Infinitely Polar Bear,’ he played a father of two and was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance. Mark gained his third Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA Award nod for his role as a prominent journalist in the biographical drama ‘Spotlight,’ which was released in 2015. Now You See Me 2″ saw Ruffalo return to the role of Agent Dylan Rhodes as Agent Dylan Rhodes. As the head of the Horseman team in the film, he was a critical and commercial success.
