John Dudley Leyton is an actor and singer from England. He is best known as a performer for the popular song “Johnny Remember Me” (written by Geoff Goddard and produced by Joe Meek), which topped the UK Singles Chart in August 1961 despite being prohibited by the BBC due to its death references. “Wild Wind,” his follow-up single, reached number two on the charts. Leyton’s acting career saw him feature in television and films during the 1960s, in addition to singing.
The Great Escape, Guns at Batasi, Von Ryan’s Express, and Krakatoa, East of Java were among his films. In 2009, he also had a tiny role in the film Telstar, which was inspired on the biography of Joe Meek and starred Callum Dixon as Leyton. After finishing his national service with the Royal Army Service Corps, Leyton moved to Highgate School and studied theatre, paying his way through drama school with bit-part roles in films and on television. His first notable acting job was as Ginger in a 1960 Granada TV production of Biggles, which won him a large following of young female fans and spawned a John Leyton fan club.
Following the success of Biggles, Leyton’s manager, Robert Stigwood, pushed him to audition as a singer for record producer Joe Meek However, in 1961, EMI purchased the Top Rank label, and Leyton’s records were released on their HMV label. Ricky Valance’s rendition of the song had previously been issued by EMI. The track by Leyton was pulled from the market, while Valance’s version topped the UK charts.
John Leyton Biography/Wiki
The HMV label produced a second single, “The Girl on the Floor Above,” but it was a flop. His first huge success, “Johnny Remember Me,” was released in conjunction with his role as a singer named Johnny Saint Cyr in the popular ATV television series Harpers West One. During the concert, Leyton played “Johnny Remember Me” with the Outlaws, and the single went to No. 1 on the charts. His following single, “Wild Wind,” debuted at number two on the UK Releases Chart, and subsequent singles likewise charted lower. Leyton appeared at the NME Poll-Winners Concert at London’s Wembley Pool on April 15, 1962.
However, Meek and Goddard’s affiliation with Leyton ended in 1963, and this, combined with the British beat boom, left Leyton stranded almost immediately, though he found enough of acting work in television and movies to keep him occupied. Despite his supporting group, The LeRoys, attempting to give Leyton’s songs a more ‘group’ sound, his chart career died away by the beginning of 1964. According to music critic Bob Stanley, ‘Leyton headlined a tour with up-and-coming support act the Rolling Stones in the same year.
‘ Very immediately, it became clear that the Stones were more popular than the headlining act, and Leyton gracefully stepped away from his music career to focus on acting. In the early 1970s, he went to the United Kingdom and tried unsuccessfully to restart his singing career, signing to the York record label in 1973. The year saw the publication of a single, “Dancing in the Graveyard c/w. Riversong (York SYK 551), as well as an album, John Leyton (York FYK 416). The next year, in 1974, Leyton’s cover of Kevin Johnson’s song “Rock ‘n’ Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life),” York YR 210) was released in the UK, but it failed to chart.
Leyton featured in the ITV television series The Nearly Man in the mid-1970s. During the 1970s, his acting roles became fewer and farther between, and by the early 1980s, he had retired from the entertainment industry. In the 1990s, however, he joined the Solid Gold Rock’n’Roll Show, where he performed alongside Marty Wilde and Joe Brown. Leyton, Showaddywaddy, Freddy Cannon, and Craig Douglas were on the autumn 2004 tour. Leyton has also returned to acting, making a brief role in John Malkovich’s 2005 film Colour Me Kubrick.
To coincide with the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Leyton published “Hi Ho, Come On England,” a reworking of Jeff Beck’s “Hi Ho Silver Lining.” He made a cameo role in the Nick Moran film Telstar during the summer of 2007. In a show titled “’60s Icons,” Leyton performed alongside 1960s stars Jess Conrad and Craig Douglas at the Theatre Royal, Windsor. Leyton continues to perform his classics on tour in the UK and Scandinavia (sometimes with the Rapiers) and has a sizable online following thanks to his own website. In 2014, he continued to travel with his band, the Flames, which included guitarist John James, drummer Ray Royal, bass guitarist Charlie Gardner, and rhythm guitarist Jeff Jefferson.
