All of these were small Australian films, and their reception was overwhelmingly positive after they were released in theatres.
In 1984, he made his TV debut in the miniseries “Bodyline,” in which he played an English cricketer. In the years that followed, Hugo appeared in a number of miniseries, including ‘The Dirtwater Dynasty’, ‘Barlow and Chambers: A Long Way from Home’, and ‘Dadah Is Death.’Hugo’s roles in films such as ‘Proof’ and ‘Reckless Kelly’ helped him gain recognition in the early 1990s. ‘Proof’ was screened at film festivals, giving Hugo his first international exposure. Hugo starred in films such as ‘Frauds’ and ‘The Custodian’ in 1993. It wasn’t until the following year that he got his big break in ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.’
