Dustin Hoffman, a famous American actor recognized for his various depictions of antiheroes and vulnerable types, was born on August 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, United States. He helped to usher in a new Hollywood tradition of average-looking but emotionally explosive starring males by being short in stature and not very attractive. Hoffman began acting at the age of 19 after dropping out of Santa Monica City College’s music program. He subsequently relocated to New York City, where he worked odd jobs for several years until landing small roles on television and main roles off-Broadway, where he earned an Obie Award.
BIOGRAPHY:
Hoffman was 30 years old when he played Benjamin Braddock, a 21-year-old upper-middle-class college graduate who, in his pursuit for a meaningful future, stumbles into an affair with a married woman his parents’ age. Hoffman was catapulted as a star as a result of this hugely popular social comedy, which struck a chord with young viewers who were disillusioned with the American elite. Hoffman played “Ratso” Rizzo, a tubercular homeless guy who makes a friendship with an unsuccessful male prostitute, in John Schlesinger’s Midnight Cowboy, which received an Academy Award for best picture in 1969. (played by Jon Voight).
The picture, which depicted a callous New York City and was grim and depressing, was another surprising success for Hoffman. Hoffman also played journalist Carl Bernstein in All the President’s Men, in which he and Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) probe the Watergate crisis (1976). Hoffman was nominated for an Oscar three times before finally winning for his sympathetic portrayal of a divorced single father in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and earning another nomination for Tootsie (1982), in which he played an out-of-work actor who finds steady employment on a daytime soap opera while posing as a woman.
Hoffman’s comeback to the stage in the 1980s was marked by two major wins. The first was his critically acclaimed portrayal as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman on Broadway in 1984, which was adapted for television the following year by CBS and won Hoffman an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. He next appeared on stage in London as Shylock in Sir Peter Hall’s production of The Merchant of Venice, where he was always keen to choose a demanding array of roles (1989).
Hoffman’s impressive portrayal of a middle-aged autistic savant in Rain Man earned him another best actor Oscar at the end of the decade (1988). Rain Man’s Raymond Babbitt, like Hoffman’s earlier portrayals, is a tough character to relate to due to his emotionlessness, yet the actor extracts just the perfect amount of pity from the viewer. After a string of big-budget Hollywood failures like Hook (1991), Billy Bathgate (1991), Hero (1992), Outbreak (1995), and Sphere (1998), Hoffman resurfaced as a sleazy, fame-hungry Hollywood producer who aspires to deceive the entire world into believing the US is at war with Albania in Wag the Dog (1997), a biting political satire that earned him his seventh Academy Award nomination.
Later, in the French production of Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), he played the grand inquisitor, and in 2003, he starred in the courtroom drama Runaway Jury. In 2004, he starred alongside Lily Tomlin in I Heart Huckabees, a comedy about a husband-and-wife detective team who helps clients solve their existential problems, and with Robert De Niro in Meet the Fockers, a broad comedy about a husband-and-wife detective team who helps clients solve their existential problems.
Hoffman’s future projects include Stranger Than Fiction (2006) and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, a children’s fantasy (2007). In Last Chance Harvey, Hoffman and his Stranger Than Fiction co-star Emma Thompson were lonely strangers who fall in love (2008). In the sequel to Meet the Fockers, Little Fockers (2010), he repeated his role as the titular character’s father, and later appeared in the dark comedy Barney’s Version (2010). Hoffman also voiced characters in the animated movie The Tale of Despereaux (2008), Kung Fu Panda (2008), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), and Kung Fu Panda 3 (2012). (2016).
Hoffman then turned his attention to television, starring as an ex-con gambler in the HBO drama Luck (2011–12), which is set in the realm of professional horse racing. After appearing in the television adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot (2015), based on a children’s book about a bachelor romancing his tortoise-loving neighbor, he returned to the big screen as a restaurant owner in Chef (2014). (Judi Dench). In 2017, he played a sculptor preparing for a retrospective of his work in New York in The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). Hoffman made his directorial debut in 2012, at the age of 75, with Quartet, an ensemble comedy about retired opera singers living in an English retirement home. He was designated a Kennedy Center honoree the same year.
