He was also the previous owner of Santa Fe Horse Park. Kokesh’s parents encouraged him to read a wide variety of books throughout his childhood and adolescence, and he developed a passion for a number of activities, including athletics, science, and technology. Kokesh went to the Devil Pups junior base camp at Camp Pendleton, which is located in San Diego County and California when he was fourteen years old. During his freshman year of high school, he was expelled from Stevenson School, a boarding school located in Pebble Beach, for being in possession of alcohol. He continued his education elsewhere. After that, he got his education at the Native American Preparatory School in San Miguel County, which is located in the state of New Mexico. Kokesh established a campus radio station while he was still in high school.
Kokesh attended Claremont McKenna College in order to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology from there. During his time at the university, he served as president of the Libertarian Club. After that, he decided to pursue his graduate education at George Washington University in the field of political management. Kokesh claims that his grandfather was the driving force behind him joining the United States Marine Corps reserves at the age of seventeen, even though he was still enrolled in high school at the time. After receiving his diploma from high school, Kokesh decided to enlist in the military and serve with the 3rd Civil Affairs Group in Fallujah, Iraq.
In recognition of his service in Iraq from February to September 2004, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and a promotion to the rank of sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He says that he was in a couple of convoys that were attacked by IEDs, that he worked in schools and mosques, and that he witnessed house raids. In February of 2007, he joined the Iraq Veterans Against the War and became an active participant in the organization (IVAW). Kokesh and twelve other members of IVAW took part in a mock occupation patrol of Washington, District of Columbia, on March 19, to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq by the United States of America in 2003. The first time that Kokesh was brought to the attention of the general public was after he gave interviews on CNN and ABC, and his photograph was published in a number of newspapers, including on the front page of the Los Angeles Times.
The photograph was taken at a protest that took place during Alberto Gonzales’ testimony to Congress regarding the firing of U.S. attorneys. While wearing a Marine Corps Boonie hat, Kokesh counted the number of times Gonzalez said “I don’t remember” or “I don’t recall” while holding up a sign (Kokesh claimed Gonzalez used such phrases 74 times) According to Kokesh, the government is the most significant contributor to the violence that exists in the world today, and he thinks that coercion on the part of the government is equally as undesirable as coercion on the part of private citizens. He is of the opinion that all governmental institutions should be done away with in order to make society safer and more respectful to one another. Kokesh has stated that he does not despise the people who are in charge of the United States government; however, he is of the opinion that the government has rendered itself ineffective by betraying the principles on which it was initially established.
